A structured path from day one
Beginners walk into a lot of BJJ gyms and get thrown into the deep end. Not at SJJA. Bruno designed our Fundamentals program specifically so that each week focuses on one foundational position — guard, side control, mount, back, standing — cycling through so you build a complete game systematically.
That means if you miss a class, no panic. Next week there’s a new focus. And after 4–6 weeks you’ve seen the whole map. After 3 months you’ll start to see the patterns. After 6 months you’ll feel like you actually know Jiu-Jitsu.
A typical Fundamentals class
Warmup — light movement, BJJ-specific mobility, some basic shrimps and rolls.
10 – 25 min
Technique of the day — coach demonstrates 1–2 related techniques with detail and variations.
25 – 45 min
Drilling with partners — reps, reps, reps. Coaches walk the mat correcting details.
45 – 60 min
Positional rolling (optional) — light rolling from the position you just drilled. Beginners can tap out any time.
What you'll learn in the first 3 months
Questions beginners always ask
“Will I have to fight people?” Only when you’re ready. Live rolling is always optional for new students, and when you do roll, you start with other beginners or patient senior belts.
“Am I too out of shape?” BJJ is how most members got in shape. Go at your own pace — 60 minutes disappears fast.
“Will I get hurt?” BJJ is statistically one of the safest combat sports. No strikes. Ever. If something feels wrong — tap. Your partner stops immediately.
Timetable: Fundamentals classes run 06:30, 09:15, 12:15 and 18:30 most weekdays.
